Roberton Island has been pest free for over 18 years – no stoats, rats, possums and other pests. The bird life has flourished and been enhanced with the introduction of birds like the Whitehead which had been extinct in the north for a 100 years. The bird songs of Kiwi and at least 29 other species greet you daily from your porch and as you explore the many walks through nature on the island. Native trees are planted every year to provide food for the birds and to revive the natural fauna. Giant Wetapunga which have existed for 60 million years thrive in our valleys. The rare and endangered Tuatara is planned for release as well.
Eagle’s owners have worked with and hosted DOC, Project Island Song, the Massey University Kiwi conservation management and students, the Auckland Zoo and other conservation programs for biodiversity on the island. Hundreds of native trees have been planted to enhance Eagles surrounding forest. An island caretaker resides onsite to care for the common areas and is available for individual owner needs.
Beautiful sunrises and sunsets, calm clear water, sub-tropical temperatures and a renewal of your spirit awaits you in this nature’s haven on Roberton Island.

Island History
The island was traditionally inhabited by the Ngapuhi iwi, one of the largest and most powerful Maori tribes in New Zealand. The Ngapuhi had settlements throughout the Bay of Islands and were known for their strong warrior culture and extensive trade networks. Motuarohia, like many other islands in the Bay of Islands, was home to several pa (fortified villages). These pa were strategically placed on the island's elevated areas, providing a defensive advantage against potential invaders. The remains of these ancient pa sites can still be found on the island, offering a glimpse into the island's past.
When Captain James Cook arrived in the Bay of Islands in 1769, he anchored the Endeavour in Cooks Cove, the front bay of Motuarohia Island. During his time there, Cook and his crew interacted with the local Maori, including members of the Ngapuhi tribe. These encounters were among the earliest between Maori and Europeans, and they were relatively peaceful compared to later interactions in other parts of New Zealand.
